Then the Buddha said
to the anxious crowd
“make of yourself a light”
for everywhere is night
but not everywhere is darkness
in the sky above
see those blazing points
dead a billion years ago
connect the dots
you can tell again every story ever told
when you’re in Heaven shining down
say a prayer for me
this unbeliever
when you wear that diamond crown
remember me who could not waken
from the dream of Reason
Then the poet said,
“More light! More light!”
and then he said no more
behind him closed that door
as they closed his lifeless eyelids
and the Gospel says
Jesus died three deaths
before the crow-torn dawn
he despaired, he was resigned,
he phoned home: “fate accomplished”
when you’re in Heaven shining down
say a prayer for me
this unbeliever
when you wear that shining crown
remember me who would not waken
from the dream of Reason
when you’re in Heaven shining down
Just a homeless man
and a sheepish crowd
wanders off into the night
and everywhere is light
and the river-roar of traffic
and the galaxies just whirl away
like water down a drain
the wheel will turn again
and turn again forever
when you’re in Heaven shining down
say a prayer for me
this unbeliever
when you wear that shining crown
remember me who could not waken
from the dream of Reason
when you’re in Heaven shining down
more light more light more light more light more light more light
when you’re in Heaven shining down
say a prayer for me
this unbeliever
when you wear that shining crown
remember me who could not waken
from the dream of Reason
when you’re in Heaven shining down
